Biography

Zareh was born in 1956, in Aleppo, Syria, to Armenian parents. In 1963 he moved to Beirut, Lebanon, with his family. At 12, Zareh began taking art classes under the instruction of a local artist. After high school, he attended fine art classes at Al Kaslik University for a year, until his academic studies were curtailed by the outbreak of the Lebanese civil war. The hostilities had a profound effect on Zareh. Because of the war's restrictions on his personal life, it pushed him into a creative outburst of new ideas in the effort to explain the extraordinary conditions around him. "I started to look at forms that represent life and birth, since most of what was around me was death and destruction. That led me to look for life forms, such as the leaf of a tree or a teardrop.

Zareh moved to the United States in 1983. Since 1988, he has participated in numerous group and solo exhibitions throughout Southern California, and has staged several live, public exhibits. These have included "Turkish Soup Made with Armenian Bones" (1998) and "The Red Trees of the Armenian Genocide" (2001), in commemoration of the Armenian Genocide of 1915. The most recent in this traveling series, titled "Marry the Priest," was in response to the sexual abuse of priests of their young parishioners and the ensuing cover-up by some members of the Catholic leadership. His shows and exhibits have garnered much media attention and accolade - both print and television.
